You are not alone

If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.
— Sir Isaac Newton

Whether you identify yourself as a student, a teacher, a young parent, a child, or whatever it is, know this: you are not alone. There have been those who have come before you, who have blazed trails before you, who have left lessons for you — if only you have the eyes to see them.

If I reblog things on WordPress, it is partially because I recognise that there are many excellent writers out there, most of whom are not even famous (sad but true). The whole gaggle of writers out there, living and dead, have blazed trails of knowledge so far and wide that some of these trails have been lost to the many, and are only visible to the very few (sad but true). Of the writers on WordPress, so many should — but do not, cannot, or will not — make a living from their writing, given the amount of goodness they’re putting out into the world (sad but true).

But here’s the good news (I’m not permanently morose =D). If we would only open our eyes, there are piles and piles of wisdom out there just waiting for us to discover them. Whether it be study tips, the psychology of learning, parenting do’s-and-don’ts, or even how to survive the obstacle course of childhood, know this: it’s all out there.

Don’t worry about the size of the library or the internet. Many of us need teachers to help us navigate the sheer vastness of these fields of knowledge, but you can always start alone, first. Joe Satriani (one of my favourite guitarists), once said that the best time to get a teacher is after 2 years of trying to play the guitar yourself, alone. That way, you would have an idea of what you want out of a teacher.

So take heart — no matter what kind of suffering you’re experiencing, there has been someone who has gone through a very similar experience. And that someone may have written a blogpost, or thanks be to <insert favoured deity here>, a book. You are not alone.
